I’m really happy with the sidewalk garden this year - and so are the bees and butterflies! I love the pop of color and dramatic look of the amaranth. The sunflowers have been amazing and it fills me with such joy when I see how many birds are enjoying their seeds. The mouse garlic I planted last fall has flourished and the bee balm, wormwood, lavender, Joe Pye weed, echinacea and dill are all doing great. The mountain mint has been too shaded but I think it will really take off next year once I weed out some lilys and Jerusalem artichokes. The jury is still out on whether the peach tree will thrive and keeping the grass at bay is still a battle. I need to just keep planting, find some good ground covers and mulch mulch mulch! In the past few weeks I’ve scavenged some yarrow, aster, and narrow leaf mountain mint from roadsides and public gardens, and I got a swamp milkweed from a neighbor so fingers crossed they take root!
2. You can place the pots in the sunniest location that you have, even if that space isn’t conducive to digging.
3. You can use containers that you already have, or try and rustle up some free ones (just make sure that they are large/deep enough for what you’re growing, and that they haven’t been used for anything toxic).
4. Make sure to cut drainage holes in containers that don’t have them.
The best container gardening book that I’ve read so far is
The Vegetable Gardener’s Container Bible: How to Grow a Bounty of Food in Pots, Tubs, and Other Containers
by Edward Smith. He shows you how to alter common containers for drainage and self-watering, and teaches you how much space you need to grow specific vegetables.
🍯How to Feel Like You Live in a Cottage in the Countryside 🍯
(When you actually live in an apartment in a big city)
Do you live in a big city but long to live in an adorable little farmhouse in the south of France? With an herb garden, a thatched roof, chickens and goats? Here are just a couple ways to incorporate cottage living into your urban lifestyle :)
Food:
🥧Bake a lot! Especially fresh bread and lattice pies
☕️Drink tea! Lavender, camomile and peppermint are all good ones

🌱If you have a backyard, plant a garden and tend to it! If not, planters on your fire escape or front stoop.
🥕The farmers market! So much more fun than buying groceries at the supermarket. Bring a wicker basket to carry your groceries in! It’s cute and it helps the environment.
